1910-1929 WWI, Revolution, Flu, Charlie Chaplin, Wall St Crash
In 1910 Edward VII died and was succeeded by his son George V. This 20 year period saw constant warfare in the world. One war finished somewhere, another one started somewhere else, but mostly they just overlapped each other and the worse one of all, of course, was 1914-1918 World War I . There was no peace anywhere.
In 1910 Japan annexeed Korea and there was the 1910-1920 Mexican Revolution, followed by the 1911-1912 Italo-Turkish War, the 1912-1913 Balkan Wars, the 1914-1918 World War I, the 1915 USA occupation of Haiti, the 1916 Easter Rising rebellion in Ireland, the 1916-1931 Basmachi Revolt, the 1917-1918 Russian Revolution, the 1917-1920 Estonian Liberation War, the 1918 Finnish Civil War, the 1918-1920 Armenian-Azeri War, the 1918-1919 Sochi conflict, the 1918-1920 Georgian-Ossetian conflict, the 1918 Georgian-Armenian War, the 1918-1919 Czechoslovakia-Hungary War, the 1918-1922 Russian Civil War, the 1918-1919 Polish-Ukrainian War, the 1918-1919 Great Poland Uprising, the 1919 Czechoslovak-Polish war, the 1919 Third Anglo-Afghan War, the 1919 First Silesian Uprising, the 1919-1921 Polish-Soviet war, the 1919-1921 Irish War of Independence, the 1919-1922 Turkish War of Independence, the 1920 Polish-Lithuanian War, the 1920 Second Silesian Uprising, the 1921 Red Army invasion of Georgia, the 1921 Third Silesian Uprising, the 1922-1923 Irish Civil War, the 1924 August Uprising in Georgia, the 1927-1937 Chinese Civil War and the 1929 Soviet-Chinese War.
The Russian Revolution of 1917 and the assassination of the Romanov royal family was terrible, as was the Spanish Flu which caused 21.6 million deaths in 1918, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1919; and the takeover of Italy in 1922 by the Fascists led by Mussolini.
In 1926 there was a huge general strike in Britain over miners who had been locked out to force a cut in wages. There was the Sacco and VAnzetti payroll robbery case in Boston, 1927; and then the Wall Street Crash of 1929, throwing millions out of work worldwide.
In the world of science, insulin was discovered by Sir Frederick Banting in 1921, radar was invented by Taylor and Young in 1922, and the planet Neptune was discovered by James Challis in 1923.
On a bright note, this period saw the very first radio broadcast -- the US election results in 1920 -- and the mass roll-out of radio broadcasting only 19 years after Marconi made the first transmission. It also saw the invention of TV in 1926 (but TV never went into production until the 1950s)
Before television, everyone went to the cinema to watch Cine-news. Talking films were finally made in 1927 -- the first film using spoken dialogue was The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson. Before that we had written captions and a guy played the organ to help us get into the mood of sad or exciting events. The old music halls were dying out, but they were still around. The main entertainment until 1927 was the silent movies -- Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton and later the romances of Rudolph Valentino and Clara Bow. And then there was jazz and the flappers doing the new fangled Charleston dance!
In this period suffragettes chained themselves to fences and did crazy things to get the vote -- and compulsory voting was introduced in Australia in 1925, For this generation of women, though, they were still totally geared to marriage and were expected to perfect cookery, needlework and house-keeping skills and have their teeth removed. No man would marry you unless you had a nice pair of false teeth!
