1990-2009 Gulf War, Kosovo, Diana, 911, Tsunami, Cyclone, SARS
It was the reign of Elizabeth II and the longest period of relative world peace and safety in this 20 year period was from 1999 to 2001 - the end of the Serbian ethnic cleansing wars and the start of the War on Terror - 2 years.
In 1991 came the Gulf War, then came the Serbian ethnic cleansing which started in Bosnia in 1992 and ended in the Kosovo crisis in 1999.
A sad experience for all was the death of Princess Diana in 1997.
The Kosovo crisis was really upsetting because of constant tv coverage showing all the Moslem families being pushed out of their homes into Albania by the Serbian leader, Slobodan Milosevic (who died in jail, 2006) -- and then the most awful experience, of course, was 9/11 and learning that the Moslem fundamentalists, led by Osama bin Laden, wants to kill all non-Moslems.
Everyone hates the War on Terror and how it is killing so many innocent people all over the world. Add so many natural disasters -- especially the 2004 tsunami, and the cyclone that hit New Orleans 2005 -- and the 21st century is becoming a killing spree. New diseases such as Bird Flu, SARS are a worry, too.
On a bright note, this generation that saw the Internet, cell phones and DVDs going global.
Many medical science advances were made -- stem cell therapy, cloning animals, and the genome mapping project -- all of which promise a healthier and longer life for the next generation (if WWIII doesn't get us first).
The social life of teenagers is almost totally electronic. Not many read books or watch much TV or listen to the radio -- they're yesterday's technology.
