1810-1829 Napoleon, War and Photography
In 1810 the Kingdom of Holland was established by Napoleon. It was also the same year that saw the outbreak of the following wars:
the 1810-1819 Colombian War of Independence, the 1810-1816 Argentine War of Independence the 1810-1811 Anglo-Dutch Java War, the 1810-1817 Merina Conquest in Madagascar, the 1810-1820 Punjab War, the 1810 Chilean Revolt, the 1810 Conquest of Hawaii, the 1810-1818 Amadu's Jihad, the 1810 Lamu Expansion and the 1810-1821 Mexican War of Independence.
In 1811 came the 4th Cape Frontier War, the 1811 Banda Oriental Occupation, the 1811-1812 Korean Revolt, the 1811 Tecumseh's War, the 1811-1818 Egyptian-Wahhabi War and the 1811-1825 Bolívar's War.
In 1812-1815 there were the Napoleonic Wars (the War of 1812, Napoleon's occupation of Moscow in 1814, his abdicatation and the following Inquisition in Rome). In other parts of the world were the 1813-1814 Creek War, the 1814-1816 Gurkha War, the 1814-1816 Ashanti Invasion of the Gold Coast, the 1814-1824 San Martin's War, the 1814-1826 Chilean War of Independence, the 1815 Second Barbary War, the 1817-1864 Caucasian War, the 1817-1818 Third Anglo-Maratha War, the 1817-1819 Zulu Civil War, the 1817-1858 Seminole Wars, the 1818-1819 5th Cape Frontier War and the 1818-1828 Zulu Wars of Conquest.
Following came the 1820-1823 Spanish Civil War, the 1821-1831 Greek War of Independence (from Turkey), the 1821-1823 Turko-Persian War, the 1821-1837 Padri War in Indonesia, the 1823-1826 First Burmese War, the 1825-1828 Russo-Persian War, the 1825-1828 Argentina-Brazil War, the 1825-1830 Java War, the 1828-1829 Gran Colombia-Peru War and the 1828-1829 Russo-Turkish War.
George III died in 1820 and was succeeded by his son George IV.
There were only 3 inventions of note in this period.. In 1811 iodine was discovered by Courtois, in 1817 Charles Goodyear invented the rubber dental plate and in 1826 Nipece invented photography.
While it was still an infant technology, photography was a great deal better than portrait painting because it was fast, cheap and real-life. From this generation onwards, there are photographs to show what we looked like, how we lived and what was important to us. It was black and white photography, of course, and this made us look a lot bleaker than were really were in person.
