1850-1869 Crimea, US Civil War, Automobiles, Typewriters & Darwin
It was the reign of Queen Victoria, the 1853-1856 Crimean War and the 1861-1865 American Civil War.
It was the outbreak of the 1850-1865 Taiping Rebellion, then came the 1852 Second Burmese War, the 1853-1856 Crimean War, the 1856-1860 Second Opium War, the 1856-1857 Anglo-Persian War, the 1857-1858 Indian Mutiny, the 1859 Austro-Sardinian War, the 1860-1873 Russian Conquests of Central Asia, the 1861-1865 American Civil War, the 1862-1867 French invasion of Mexico, the 1863-1868 Japanese Civil War, the 1864 Second war of Schleswig (Second Danish-German War), the 1864-1870 War of the Triple Alliance (Paraguay War), the 1865-1866 Chincha Islands War (Spain against Chile and Peru), the 1866 Austro-Prussian War (Seven Weeks War), the 1868 Indian Wars, the 1868-1869 Boshin War in Japan and the 1868-1878 Ten Years' War.
The heroine of the period was Florence Nightingale, nurse of the Crimean War, and the hero was the naturalist Charles Darwin.
The American Civil war 1861-1865 killed too many young men and drove a terrible wedge between the people of the new nation, but the emancipation of serfs in Russia in 1861 and of slaves in 1865 in the USA was a great tribute to the times as was the cessation in 1868 of convict transports to Australia.
It was a period of wonderful ideas and inventions. In 1851 the refrigerator invented by James Harrison, in 1855 steel production was invented by Henry Bessemer, in 1859 Cocaine was discovered by Niemann as an anesthetic, in 1855 the automobile was invented by Karl Benz, in 1858 Edwin Holms invented the burglar alarm, in 1859 Darwin's Origin of Species was published, in 1860 Picinotti invented the generator, in 1861 the machine gun was invented by Richard Gatling, in 1864 the typewriter was invented by Mitterhoffer, in 1865 Gregor Mendel established the laws of genetic inheritance and in 1867 the phenol, carbolic acid disinfectants were discovered by Wohler.
The most useful discovery for this time was disinfectants. Most diseases were caused and spread by poor hygiene, especially in hospitals, so the manufacture and use of such things as carbolic soap really saved many more lives.
