1870-1889 Telephones, Phonographs and Freud
It was the reign of Queen Victoria and the longest period of relative world peace and safety from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 to the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877 - 6 years.
The Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870-- it lasted until 1871 -- and six years of world peace was shattered in 1877 with the Russo-Turkish War which lasted until 1878. Then came the 1878-1880 Second Anglo-Afghan War, the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War, the 1880-1881 First Boer War, the 1884-1885 Franco-Chinese War, the 1885-1886 Serbo-Bulgarian War and then the 1885-1887 Third Anglo-Burmese War.
It sounds like a violent world, but with soldiering being just about the only form of employment available for many young men -- and big nations and commercial interests wanting more and more of the slice of markets and money -- war was a fact of life. That's how nations got what they wanted.
In this period, the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 (the first telephone exchange was open in Boston, 1878). In 1878 Thomas Edison invented phonograph, in 1886 Sigmund Freud founded psychoanalysis and in 1888 Nikola Tesla invented the electric motor.
