1890-1909 Flu, Plague, Earthquakes, Phones, Planes, Cinema
Queen Victoria died in 1901 and was succeeded by her son, Edward VII. The longest period of relative world peace and safety was from the oubreak of the 1894-1895 First Sino-Japanese War - 4 years.
After the 1894-1895 First Sino-Japanese War came the 1895-1896 First Italo-Abyssinian War, the 1895-1898 Second Cuban War of Independence, the 1896 Anglo-Zanzibar War, the 1896-1898 Philippine Revolution, the 1897 First Greco-Turkish War (aka the Thirty Days' War), the 1897-1900 Boxer Rebellion, the 1898 Spanish-American War, the 1899-1902 Second Boer War, the 1899-1913 Philippine-American War, the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War, the 1905 Revolution in Russia and the 1905-1907 Armenian-Tatar War.
Just about all the wars in this period, as others, were caused by the expansionist ambitions of the big nations, or uprisings against them..
The real blight though was the Russian flu of 1889 which lasted till 1892, killing millions around the world. Also, there was an outbreak of plague in 1894 which was scary. In this period, people were more terrified by disease than by war, so saying that anyone's life was relatively safe is not the whole story.
Also, in 1906, came the earthquake that flattened San Francisco.
In 1891, the zip fastener was invented by Judson; in 1892 Alexander Graham Bell made the first long-distance telephone call from New York to Chicago; in 1893 aspirin was discovered by Hermann Dresser as an analgesic; in 1895 X-ray was invented by Roentgen; in 1895 Lumiere invented cinema; in 1895 Gillette invented the safety razor; in 1898 Marie Curie discovered radium; in 1901 Marconi made the first radio transmission from England to Newfoundland; in 1901 adrenaline discovered by Takamine; in 1903 Orville and Wilbur Wright invented the airplane; and in 1907 the washing machine was invented by Hurley.
What an amazing 20 years of invention!
When Lumiere invented cinema there was no sound, of course. They were called flicks because the film flickered. The main form of entertainment for the general population was still the music halls, but it was not seemly for a young woman to attend them.
By far the most remarkable invention was the airplane.
