In 1306, a year before Edward I died, his enemy, Robert
Bruce, had himself crowned King of Scotland and Edward I retaliated by ordering
a policy of judicial terror -- hanging ordinary country folk as well as known
agitators.
He also imprisoned Robert Bruce's sister, Mary, in a cage hung from
the walls of Roxburgh castle so that passers-by might stare at her.
Edward I died in 1307 and was succeeded by his son Edward II.
As well as the 1296 First War of Scottish Independence (which continued until 1328), this twenty year period was also blighted by the Ottoman-Byzantine Wars which started in 1301 and continued almost non-stop for more than a hundred years
In 1294, John of Montecorvino set out as a Catholic missionary to China. Of course, his mission was not so much to save souls as to check out the prospects for trade and conquest.
